Chp. 1- Simplify the Teaching of Writing

Here are some of the highlights that I am going to embrace, continue, and implement in my own classroom:
1. Have the students write with real purposes and audiences.
2. I must do more writing and share it with my students. It is so important for them to see that I go through the same process that I teach them to do.
3. I must continue to read aloud to the students and draw their attention to the way the
authors write.
4. I must continue to have conferences with students to give them valuable feedback and encouragement in order for them to grow as writers.

I can already tell from just reading the 1st chapter that I am going to learn so much, which in turn will make me a better writing teacher.

Sounds like you have a plan. As you read more, I am sure you will find additional ideas to help implement your plan.

Steph, we are on the same page when it comes to allowing our students to see us write more. They need to see and hear our thinking/writing process. We know that reading out loud to our students is valuable time. It does give us the opportunity to point out great ideas, word choice, voice and etc. I love pointing our similies.

Stephanie, I totally agree with your steps to improving your instruction of writing. I know that we will all learn from each other during this study group. I look forward to it!
